12-year-old Bailey (Nykiya Adams) squats in the outskirts of North Kent with her older brother and their single father, Bug (Barry Keoghan). Bug has little time for his children as he is soon to be married, and Bailey, who is approaching puberty, is in need of attention. When she meets kind stranger Bird (Franz Rogowski), her life radically changes. Expanding her social realist style into a magical fable, director Andrea Arnold’s return to narrative film is an extraordinary coming-of-age tale shot on sumptuous 16mm.
