Groundbreaking when it was made and still a fiercely original work 25 years later, By Hook or By Crook is a trans and butch buddy film that follows three weeks in the life of Shy (Silas Howard), a handsome gender-bender. Emotionally devastated after the death of his father, Shy moves to the big city to become a grifter where he meets Valentine (Harry Dodge) who is searching for her birth mother. The pair hit it off and decide to embark on a life of petty crime together to figure out their place in the world. Shot guerrilla-style on Mini-DV and Super-8, By Hook or By Crook inspired a new wave of DIY queer filmmaking.
