Design for Living

Commercial artist Gilda (Miriam Hopkins) meets painter George (Gary Cooper) and playwright Tom (Fredric March) on a train en route to Paris. Quickly noticing a mutual attraction between herself, George, and Tom, the trio decide to enter a “gentlemen’s agreement” to live together platonically while they support one another in their creative pursuits. When Tom leaves Paris for London to stage a play, the foundation of their platonic triad is broken. A pre-Hays code comedy, Design for Living considers the love triangle as perhaps the only avenue for true sexual, romantic, and platonic fulfillment.
