Details About the Film

In the 1950s, a boy discovers that he can control the global telephone system by whistling a magic tone. Born blind and yearning for connection, Joybubbles’s obsession with the telephone ushers in a subculture that would shape the future of hacking and technology. Told through archival footage and Joybubbles’s own voice recordings, this documentary from Director Rachael J. Morrison celebrates the life of a visionary who redefined connection and challenged conventional notions about disability, identity, and imagination.

This screening of Joybubbles is presented as part of Gotham Week Honors “Best Film Coming to a Theater Near You,” in partnership with The Gotham and Art House Convergence. Joybubbles will be presented with open audio descriptions and open captions.

–Brian Farvour, The Playlist

"Morrison helps tell his story in a trippily visual way, sure, for those of us who are sighted. But you could easily close your eyes and let the loving embrace of Joybubbles’ soothing voice wash over you"
