Details About the Film

Nearly 40 years after becoming the first Deaf actor to win an Academy Award, Marlee Matlin reflects on her life in her primary language, American Sign Language. Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore follows Matlin’s meteoric rise, the challenges of navigating an industry unprepared for Deaf talent, and her many successes. The directorial debut of Deaf actor and writer Shoshannah Stern reimagines the conventional documentary form with innovative editing techniques, merging the story of Matlin’s life with the fight for inclusion in Hollywood.

Film Reviews

"A bittersweet corrective, a tribute to a trailblazer long overdue her flowers."

–Monica Castillo, RogerEbert.com

"It’s as much about its form as its content; what it says is demonstrated by how it says it. The resulting film is engrossing — and it’s also profound."

–Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times

"This is a very intimate film, one that really speaks to who Matlin is... much more than just a highlight reel of Matlin’s accomplishments, but those are still sufficiently worth celebrating."

–Abe Friedtanzer, Awards Buzz
