In China, a new industry has emerged tasked with helping couples remain married when infidelity threatens their relationship. Wang Zhenxi, a member of this new profession of “Mistress Dispellers,” is hired to break up affairs by any means necessary. Offering dramatic access to a real, unfolding love triangle, Mistress Dispeller reveals what’s typically hidden in the collapse of a relationship. A fascinating foray into the complexities of modern love, Elizabeth Lo’s sophomore feature raises compelling questions about marriage, labor, and cultural norms.
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Elizabeth Lo moderated by Robert Greene, Filmmaker-in-Chief at the Jonathan B. Murray Center for Documentary Journalism, and will be preceded by a musical performance from Reiko Huang.
This annual screening is presented by True/False Film Fest and the University of Missouri’s Jonathan B. Murray Center for Documentary Journalism to spotlight essential new nonfiction.
