Nickel Boys

Director RaMell Ross’s sophomore follow-up to Hale County This Morning, This Evening (True/False 2018) is a formally inventive adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer prize winning novel, The Nickel Boys. Shot almost entirely in first-person point-of-view, Nickel Boys documents the fierce friendship forged between two young Black men at an abusive reform school in 1960s Florida during the height of Jim Crow. A radical work of American cinema, Nickel Boys ushers in a new way to depict historical and systemic anti-Black violence.
