Occupied City

Occupied City

January 21, 2024
The past and present are inextricable.

Details About the Film

British director and artist Steve McQueen expands his prolific practice with his first feature length documentary, Occupied City. Collaborating with Dutch journalist and documentarian Bianca Stigter, McQueen draws upon her monograph, Atlas of an Occupied City (Amsterdam 1940-1945), to craft a Herculean excavation of the residues of Nazi-occupation in his adopted city. Forgoing talking heads or archival footage, McQueen instead constructs his film using newly captured images of Amsterdam filmed over the past three years, including during the city’s COVID lockdown. Occupied City goes door-to-door in Amsterdam recounting the violence that took place in these exact locations with a startlingly detached voice-over by actress Melanie Hyams. McQueen provocatively connects the omnipresent, violent past of Amsterdam to modern-day Amsterdam marked by pandemic and protest. Occupied City is a towering four-and-a-half hour documentary and includes a 15 minute intermission.
