From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos comes the fantastically cinematic Poor Things, based on the eponymous novel by Scottish writer Alasdair Gray. After a tragic death, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is revived by mad scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), and she emerges with a childlike aura. With her mind and body at odds, Bella struggles to understand the world around her. As her mind evolves and her thirst for knowledge grows, Bella feels trapped in Dr. Godwin’s home and escapes with debauched lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo). On a globe-trotting odyssey, Bella experiences the beauty and the harshness of the world, and searches for liberation on her own terms. Poor Things resplendently depicts Bella’s evolution through eye-popping imagery, playful parody, and unabashed portrayals of sexuality.
