The delightfully nonstylish aesthetic of Lake Ivan may seem like something you've seen before but can't place, and in fact they describe themselves as "archeologists of the unconscious." Spontaneous Artifacts navigates uncanny subconscious landscapes, reanimating the familiar through a unique process of spontaneity and precision.
Actors David Finkelstein and Ian W. Hill record themselves improvising an extended dialogue and, in a signature move, appear throughout the film as a sort of picture-in-picture overlay. Channeling a wide variety of emotions and states, their screen interactions suggest classic cinematic duos, corporate training materials, and perhaps a satire of both.
Despite its meticulous detail, their constantly shifting 3D animation is made up of purposely generic elements. Fonts, synthesized background music, and objects form a Web 1.0 arcade of human thought ranging from states of hyperstimulation to desolation and bewilderment. Through it all, Lake Ivan's meticulous use of seemingly stock or ironic imagery supports their sincere inquiry into shared human culture and concerns. You may find yourself having aesthetic debates about flying pizza or discussing the symbolism behind parking garages.
Director David Finkelstein will appear in person to discuss his methods and ideas.
