Following the finale of his HBO TV series How To with John Wilson, filmmaker John Wilson sets out to make the definitive documentary about concrete. Concerned about how to make what could be a boring subject interesting, he attends a workshop on how to write a Hallmark movie and decides that this industry-approved method will get his project off the ground. However, John quickly realizes that even concrete may not be sturdy enough to balance artistic freedom with the limits of today’s film industry in this innovative nonfiction portrait of art, concrete, and mundaneness.
"Part educational schooling on the universal building material, part loving tribute to eccentric New York City residents, it’s a wholly unique, ridiculously weird look at a subject that does more than scratch the surface."
–Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction
"Wilson’s debut feature The History of Concrete shows the expert essayist as sneakily profound as ever, contemplating life and art and piecing together meaning from the fragments."
–Nicolas Rapold, Sight & Sound
"You’re left wondering how a movie about concrete could leave a lump in your throat. But that’s how Wilson works, making us see what we might not have otherwise."
–Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
