Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) is a curmudgeonly academic at a prestigious New England boarding school who is loathed by students and ignored by his colleagues. Every year Barton Academy closes for winter vacation, and this year Mr. Hunham is forced to supervise the holdovers — the students who cannot go home during winter vacation. Instead of a group of Barton students, the holdovers are Mr. Hunham, troubled student Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), and grieving school chef Mary Lamb (Da'Vine Joy Randolph). This unlikely trio spends the winter vacation learning about one another and confronting what's missing in their lives respectively. The Holdovers is a dramatic comedy about the unexpected connections anyone can make in a familiar space.
