Director's Choice: Donkey Skin

Opens Mar 27, 2017

Each month, we select a director with a new film and screen one of their all-time favorite movies. For March, we're screening Jacques Demy's Donkey Skin, a favorite of writer-director-composer-costume-designer Anna Biller, whose The Love Witch screens March 31-April 2.

In this lovingly crafted, wildly eccentric adaptation of a classic French fairy tale, Jacques Demy casts Catherine Deneuve as a princess who must go into hiding as a scullery maid in order to fend off an unwanted marriage proposal—from her own father, the king (Jean Marais). A topsy-turvy riches-to-rags fable with songs by Michel Legrand, Donkey Skin creates a tactile fantasy world that’s perched on the border between the earnest and the satiric, and features Delphine Seyrig in a delicious supporting role as a fashionable fairy godmother.

The Love Witch director Anna Biller writes, "I was so inspired by that film that I attempted to make a “dress the color of the moon” for my high school prom. I bought a vintage wedding dress with a train and sewed on lots of paillettes and peacock feathers, when everyone else was wearing simple strappy dresses. Everyone laughed at me, and I was incredulous as to how awful it was. But it was one of my first attempts to create my inner fantasy world through costume."
