The Beguiled

Opens Jun 30, 2017

Directed by Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides), this exhilarating, atmospheric thriller takes place near the end of the Civil War. Cpl. John McBurney (Colin Farrell), a wounded Union soldier, finds himself stranded In rural Mississippi. Before he bleeds out, he is rescued by a young student (Oona Laurence) of the Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies. Nicole Kidman stars as Miss Martha, the headmistress of this isolated, all-girls boarding school. Rather than report John to the authorities, Martha decides to nurse him back to health. The first man this house has seen in ages, John quickly fetches the attention of the seminary's seven residents, including the schoolteacher (Kirsten Dunst), a student (Elle Fanning) and Miss Martha herself. Coppola received the Best Director prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the first woman in more than fifty years to do so.

"Thrilling and intoxicating. This is Coppola's funniest film to date. Still, it is very much a work by a maestro of heady melancholy. Beneath the exquisitely rendered visual and atmospheric gild is a passionate and brilliantly observed lament for female sexuality left to go to seed." (Sophie Monks Kaufman, Little White Lies)

Each month, Ragtag and the Citizen Jane Film Festival spotlight a new, woman-directed film. The Beguiled is June's "Citizen Jane Suggests" selection.
