Real-life couple Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and Emily Gordon (The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail) reinvigorate the romantic comedy with The Big Sick, a hilarious, tenderly observed adaptation of their own courtship. Nanjiani plays Kumail, a rising star in the stand-up comedy world. Kumail finds himself smitten with grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan); however, his loving Pakistani-American parents have other plans for his romantic future. When Emily lands in an emergency situation, Kumail is forced to sort through this complex situation alongside her parents (a superb Holly Hunter and Ray Romano). The Big Sick is directed by Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer, Hello My Name Is Doris).
"Joyous and generous-hearted. I fell hard for Ms. Kazan and Mr. Nanjiani and The Big Sick, which tells a great story with waves of deep feeling and questions of identity and makes the whole thing feel like a breeze. What gives the movie both fizz and sting — and shows that there's plenty of juice and possibility left in the American romantic comedy — are its particulars." (Manohla Dargis, New York Times)
