Disobedience

Opens May 18, 2018

Sebastián Lelio, who received an Academy Award this year for directing A Fantastic Woman, returns with this passionate and tender queer film set in a London Orthodox Jewish community. The black sheep of her family, Ronit (Rachel Weisz) became a photographer and moved away to New York. When her rabbi father dies, Ronit returns home, where she is surprised to learn that his most beloved student, Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), is in a relationship with her dear childhood friend, Esti (Rachel McAdams). Once back, Ronit and Esti's passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality. From a screenplay by Lelio and playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz, based on Naomi Alderman's book.

"Voluptuously alive. The magical realism that A Fantastic Woman flirts with is Disobedience's guiding principle. The triumph of the film is the balletic gracefulness with which the performances and style exteriorize the interior worlds of the characters." (Ed Gonzalez, Slant)

"Striking and warmly nuanced. Another triumph in what's shaping up to be a major career." (Andrew Barker, Variety)
