Jinn

Opens Dec 7, 2018

ONE WEEK ONLY. Summer is a 17-year old carefree black girl, whose world is turned upside down when her mother, Jade, abruptly converts to Islam. Jade becomes a different person, prompting Summer to reevaluate her identity. While Summer initially resists Islam, she eventually becomes drawn to its teachings. However, Summer's need to be free and untethered to any one way of being clashes with her mother's strict interpretation of the faith and causes a growing rift between them. Summer's new faith is tested by a burgeoning romance with a fellow Muslim classmate, Tahir.

"Radically empathetic. It's actually quite hard to find a film that treats crises and conversions of religious faith as face-value issues, and not metaphors for something broader and more secular. Jinn is a special little film, one that never lets its complicated, contradictory characters become abstractions, but instead revels in all the disaparate elements that make them who they are."
