Oscar Shorts 2019-Live Action

Starting February 8, Ragtag will be screening the nominees of both the Animated and Live Action categories, offering your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool)! A perennial hit with audiences around the country, don't miss this year's selection of shorts. The Academy Awards ceremony takes place Sunday, Feb. 24.

LIVE ACTION SHORTS (109 minutes)

Madre – While at home in her apartment with her own mother in Spain, a woman gets a phone call from her six-year-old son, who's on holiday in France with his father. Every parent's nightmare ensues. Dirs. Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Maria del Puy Alvarado, Spain, 19 min.

Fauve – Fauve, which stars Felix Grenier and Alexandre Perreault and earlier nabbed a Sundance Special Jury Prize, tells the story of two boys who sink into a seemingly innocent power game at a surface mine, with shockingly tragic results. Dirs. Jeremy Comte and Maria Gracia Turgeon, Canada, 17 min. 

Marguerite – The story of an aging woman (Beatrice Picard) who develops a friendship with her nurse (Sandrine Bisson) that inspires her to reveal a long-hidden sexual taboo and make peace with her past.  Dir. Marianne Farley and Marie-Helene Panisset, Canada, 19 min. 

Detainment – Two ten year-old boys are detained by police under suspicion of abducting and murdering a toddler. A true story based on interview transcripts and records from the James Bulger case which shocked the world in 1993. Dirs. Vincent Lambe and Darren Mahon, Ireland, 30 min. 

Skin – A small supermarket in a blue collar town, a black man smiles at a 10 year old white boy across the checkout aisle. This innocuous moment sends two gangs into a ruthless war that ends with a shocking backlash. Dirs. Guy Nattiv and Jaime Ray Newman, USA, 20 min.
