The King of Comedy
Opens Oct 11, 2019
This 1982 dark-comedy, initially a box-office failure, has since been reinvestigated and held up among Scorsese and De Niro's best work. The King of Comedy tells the absurd and unnerving story of an unsuccessful comedian's worship of a late-night talk show host. The film, while playing like an anxiety attack in slow motion is as funny as it is terrifying—made all the more important at this moment as it served as the backbone of this year's controversial Joker, as well as a model for Steve Carell's performance in Foxcatcher and a guiding influence for the upcoming Uncut Gems. Definitely a film of the zeitgeist, it drives on the roles that media and celebrity play in acts of terror and tragedy.
