Stuart Gordon's loose adaptation of HP Lovecraft's original 1921 short story is a genre-film that, while certainly sleazy, manages brilliance beyond its madness. As described by the American Genre Film Archive, "this epochal, awe-inspiring amalgam of FRANKENSTEIN, THE BEYOND, and REVENGE OF THE NERDS is where science meets chaos to produce a hyperactive overdose of gruesome insanity." Indeed, this take on the timeless tale of mad-scientists bringing the dead back to life stands as a true cult crowd-pleaser. As famed film critic Pauline Kael put it, "The movies are so rarely great art, that if we can't appreciate great trash, there is little reason for us to go."
