Pain and Glory

Opens Dec 6, 2019

Physically-ailing filmmaker Salvador Mallo (Banderas) experiences a series of re-encounters—some of them in the flesh, others remembered. First loves, second loves, his mother, mortality, an actor from his past, the sixties, the eighties, the present and the immeasurable emptiness at the impossibility of continuing to make art. The film speaks of creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one’s own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need as well his salvation. An auto-biographic exploration of self from the auteur behind such masterpieces as All About My Mother, Broken Embraces, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

"Stays with you, and grows richer with reflection." (Randy Cordova, Arizona Republic)

"Emotions and eye-popping colors tell the director's deeply personal story, with Antonio Banderas front and center." (Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times)
