I Know What You Did Last Summer

Slash from the past!

Opens Oct 30, 2020

IF YOU'RE GOING TO BURY THE TRUTH, MAKE SURE IT STAYS BURIED.

In a window to the collective dreams and nightmares of the comparatively care-free 1990s, I Know What You Did Last Summer muses on privilege and punishment with brooding it-girls and it-boys (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. respectively) before quickly skewering the whole conversation on a mad-fisherman's ice-hook.

Screenwriter Kevin Williamson — who can be described as "John Carpenter meets John Hughes" — formalized the rules of the Slasher one year prior with the seminal Scream. Here he drops the self-reflection but still applies the rules evenly — polite society might let the rich kids off the hook for murder, but psycho-killers aren't part of polite society. Prom-queens and quarterbacks can't cash in their trust-funds to escape Williamson's wrath. As with much of the genre, "is it a good movie?" isn't quite the relevant question here. Is it fun? Does it deserve space on the marquee? Definitely.
